Why circulairty? A fair start of the story.

So… What’s the problem, really?
Sometimes I catch myself assuming that everyone already knows what’s going on.
But let’s start at the beginning — without getting into a political debate.
Why do we need a circular economy?
Two years ago, during the Circular Kickstart, Mieke Pieters explained it perfectly.
The challenge is simple: our use of raw materials keeps increasing, but the Earth cannot replenish them at the same pace.
Some materials take years, decades, or even centuries to regenerate, while we deplete them at lightning speed. 💨
I've included an image to give you better insight into our raw material consumption!
Back in 1972, the Club of Rome already sounded the alarm, and the debate has only intensified since then.
Because let’s face it: economic growth is still the engine of our society.
But the real question is: can it be done in a more sustainable way?
A new economy needs a new mindset
In The Book of Hope by Jane Goodall, there’s a line that stuck with me:
"We must first care for people before we can care for nature and animals."
That really resonates. In the end, we all tend to prioritize our own situation and prosperity before we focus on the planet.
So, if we want the circular economy to work, we need to create a model that is accessible and practical for everyone.
Maybe that means growing smarter and more sustainably? Or an economy where local production becomes more important and we strengthen our European industry?
Half full or half empty?
We live in a world where everything is interconnected.
We’re seeing more extreme natural disasters, strained systems, and a growing fear of the future — sometimes resulting in bizarre political decisions (but I promised I wouldn’t go there! 😅)
So how does all of this bring me to… carpets?
Well, I believe the glass is half full. Or better yet: that we at least have to try to change things. Because let’s be honest: we don’t really have a choice.
👉 Maison Forton is my way of contributing.
I’m looking at how things can be done differently. I’m trying. Whether I succeed entirely or not.
Because honestly? I’m still too young to be cynical. 😉
The more you walk the path of “yes we can”, the more inspiring people you meet who prove that change is possible. 🚀
Should I drop a few names?
Sofar, Resound, Duplex Studio, La Gadoue, Footprint Inc, Panta Club… all examples of companies daring to do things differently.
